Overseas Community Service Project in Bintan

September 2019

During the September school holidays, I spent 7 days in a rural area of Bintan as part of Singapore Polytechnic's Overseas Community Service Project to help the village locals improve their sanitation and living conditions in the area and increase awareness of proper hygiene and zero waste.
The programmes includes a beach clean-up, teaching the local children on proper hygiene practices such as washing hands and brushing teeth, sharing methods on how to reduce waste with the local women and lastly was to build 2 safe water gardens for the respective houses with the assistance and guidance of the Loola resort staff and the village locals.
Even though the process was gruelling as most of the time everyone has to work under the blazing heat, the synergy that I had with my teammates and with the community was astounding as we were encouraging each other to have the mentality of ‘not giving up’.
Besides this, I have learnt to better adapt to spontaneous scenarios and to other culture as well as develop my communication, teamwork and leadership skills. And most importantly, forged new and strong friendships and memories
